World COPD Day

Today is World COPD Day

COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is the name used to describe a number of conditions, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, where people have difficulty breathing because of long-term damage to their lungs.

Around three million people are estimated to be living with COPD in England alone; over two million of these are unaware that they have the condition.

This year for World COPD Day, British Lung Foundation (BLF) have planned a range of activities to help raise awareness and understanding about the disease.

To discover more about World COPD Day and just what the British Lung Foundation have planned click HERE or on the link below.

Nebulisers and COPD

Although not everybody who needs a nebuliser has COPD, we do take a lot of calls from those who do as well as their relatives and friends. “My friend has COPD and I was wondering if they would benefit from a nebuliser if I bought one?” “My mother used a nebuliser in A&E and I was wondering would she benefit from having one at home?”

The first person to speak to has to be the medical professional who is helping with your COPD. It could be the COPD Nurse the British Lung Foundation Nurse the Respiratory Nurse or the G.P. They will decide if now is the right time for you or your relative to have a nebuliser at home. They will decide which medication to prescribe to use with it and advise on how often you may need to nebulise. For some people its a regular daily routine for others it's as and when.

We can help you choose the right nebuliser to suit your needs and there is lots of information throughout this blog to get you started. You can click HERE to view our range or call us on 01942 70120

Pulse Oximetry. A quick re-cap.

Pulse Oximetry is a technology used to determine the amount of oxygen in your blood. Keeping levels within a normal range means oxygen is being delivered to the cells of your body to keep them functioning. Its application is simple and it provides information about low blood oxygen conditions and your pulse rate. However it should be regarded as only one aspect of your total assessment and if you have any concerns at all you should always seek medical help

Normally oxygen saturation percentage should always be above 97 percent. Readings below this indicate varying levels of low blood oxygen (hypoxia). The term "normal" however can be misleading. If you have a chest condition such as COPD you may always have a lower than average amount of oxygen in your blood which means a pulse oximeter reading of 92 to 95 percent may be "normal" for you, each person is different. Other factors can affect the readings, even nail varnish. It also monitors your fingertip pulse rate and for adults and adolescents when resting an average pulse is between 60-100 beats per minute but for those of you with a pre existing medical condition it can vary. It doesn't monitor your pulses rhythm or strength and you can read more about factors which may alter your pulse rate reading HERE

There are many breathing tests which may be done to assess just what's happening to your lungs and you can read more about them on the British Lung Foundation website  http://www.blf.org.uk/Page/Breathing-tests  and many reasons for breathlessness which you can read about here http://www.blf.org.uk/conditions/detail/breathlessness

Getting out of breath can be very frightening, which makes the breathlessness worse. In trying to avoid this, people often reduce the amount of activity they do. However, this does not help, as over time you become unfit, tired and more breathless. (http://www.blf.org.uk/Page/Pulmonary-rehab) A pulse oximeter can be an invaluable tool in helping you monitor your symptoms and if you you think you, a friend or relative would benefit then take a look at the PO 30  HERE

The return of the Pulse Oximeter

Ever since we deleted the fingertip pulse oximeter from our range we have continued to take calls from many of you asking “why we no longer supply them” and “do we know anywhere you can buy one ?” After a lot of searching we are now happy to be able to announce that we have two splendid models available for you, both are reliable, accurate and come with a 3 year warranty.
The PO 30 and the PO 80

The PO 30 is simple to operate and has an easy to read colour screen which you can rotate to 6 different views, with the added advantage of an adjustable brightness display. The automatic cut off switch helps to save battery life and the low battery indicator lets you know when its time for a change. Light enough at under 60 grams and small enough to pop in your pocket, the PO 30 comes complete with 2 AAA batteries, a lanyard and a handy belt pouch for if you are out and about.

If feeling short of breath has become part and parcel of your daily life the PO 30 is smartly designed, useful and beneficial, wether you are buying it for yourself a friend or relative, a fingertip pulse oximeter could help to bring you peace of mind.

You can see just how useful and well design it is by clicking HERE and as always if you need to call us you can ring 01942 701210 or email by clicking HERE.

She  uses all of her therapies collectively to assess and support her client’s nutritional requirements. She is qualified in her field and passionate about her work. You can read more about her and what she has to offer HERE

Complimentary Therapies and Nebulisers

We take calls many times a month from those of you who have spoken to practitioners of complimentary therapies and have been recommended a therapy via a nebuliser. As we have written previously we can certainly help you choose a nebuliser, have a chat about how it works and how it will fit into your lifestyle, but we don't have the knowledge base or expertise to discuss the suggested therapy and these are questions you must put to your practitioner.

A nebuliser is a medical device and can have serious side effects, as could the medicine or therapy you choose to use in it. In the U.K. nebulisers and nebuliser medications are licensed and monitored by the
Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency

The British Lung Foundation have some really good advice about complimentary therapies which you can find HERE or you could have a chat in any of the forums on our useful links

We also get approached quite often by therapist themselves and although we have said no in the past, we feel in response to demand, its now time to set up a dedicated page for those of you who are interested. You can find their links and a little bit about their practice by clicking HERE, using the search facility, or the label on the right hand side of this page. If any therapist want to get back in touch about being added to the list you can email HERE

Fund raising for Nebulisers

Who says the British Public don’t know how to get behind a good cause. Not us that’s for sure.

This summer we have been approached more times than ever before by charitable groups such as Breathe Easy up and down the country, as well as individuals, who have taken part in lots fund raising activities all in order to raise a lump sum of money to purchase and donate a multiple number of nebulisers to their local hospital, hospice or community COPD team.

Many of the media headlines would have us believe that most of us are unhappy and dissatisfied with the treatment we receive from the N.H.S. Well not those of you we generally speak to. Of course all isn’t perfect but the main motivation of those fund raising  is to give something back for the care and attention they or a relative have received whilst unwell. And this summer you have been doing that in spades.

Well done. It warms our heart and when we are met with doubters and cynics you are always the first people we think of. We feel proud that we too have been able to help a little along the way even if its only to help make your hard earned funds stretch a little further.

Nebulisers, would you benefit?

Well what a difference a few weeks can make, it has turned from the coldest spring to what may become the hottest summer in a while.

If you are struggling with an exacerbation of your chest condition or having any difficulty breathing the first priority has to be to seek medical help from your G.P. Respiratory Nurse or Asthma Nurse.

There is also plenty of hints and tips on how to manage in the heat on our kindred sprits websites as well as large communities of fellow sufferers who have developed their own coping strategies over the years which you may find useful.

We have seen an increase in calls about nebulisers and for some, once you have been assessed by your medical professional, a nebuliser may provide vital relief but you do need that all important prescription first. As with our mucus clearance devices, although they don't need medicine there are contra indications and they aren't suitable for everyone. So its worth just asking a few questions before you invest in a nebuliser, shaker or flutter

If you get the go ahead, there is lots of information throughout this blog, you can view our full range HERE or for frequently asked questions and answers click here which will help you choose the product to fit your needs as well as lots of independent advice from our kindred spirits

In the meantime for those of you that can, relax and enjoy it and if you are struggling remember it won't last forever this is the U.K. after all !

Omron nebulisers, though initially known to you through their widely used blood pressure machines, are now extremely popular and all three companies operate internationally and produce a product range for you to use at home and to suit all your needs.

So who are Pari?

Omron MicroAir "the pocket rocket"

It seems that when Phil Johnson nicknamed the Omron MicroAir "the pocket rocket" it struck a chord with quite a few of you. The nickname is proving quite popular and judging by the amount of calls many of you are hoping to soon be out and about but if you are still hoping for push start or a friendly face for inspiration then why not check out our Kindred Spirits and see whats happening in your area.

Portable Nebulisers for out and about

Hopefully the worst of the cold weather will soon be behind us and we can all be look forward to getting out and about. If your adventures need a nebuliser to help you on your way, there are lots to choose from on our web site. Below is a personal story from Phil Johnson, who is the Chairman of the "20-20Voice" Cancer Appeal It highlights exactly why they can be so beneficial but also comes with an word of caution.

Hi there folks, Well, as many of you probably know I bought one of the Omron MicroAir U22 portable nebulisers as I am one of those people that suddenly get 'caught short' when out and about! No, not due to the call of nature but due to shortness of breath which can be embarrassing when in company and downright frightening at any time. Hence I bought a couple of these handy little gizmo's, one for myself and one for any "20-20 Voice" Cancer Appeal members that might need to take one on holiday for 'out and about' days.
I've used mine on several occasions but I'll give you a perfect example of the uses for these little pocket nebulisers:-
Last week we went out for a family meal to celebrate my wife's birthday and we took the "Pocket Rocket" with us, just as well as the restaurant was supremely busy, thus food arrivals somewhat slow. But despite that we had a good old natter/catch up and once the starters had been dispensed with the 'mains' quickly followed. Granted, i had to go outside for some fresh air (I call it my 'non fag-break') while others enjoyed their cigarettes as the restaurant started to feel 'stuffy' to me. Now I know that all fellow 'larys' will understand what I mean by stuffy so I won't elaborate on that.

The party broke up about 10:15 and my wife and I agreed that 10 minutes on the "Pocket Rocket" in the car would be ideal before I drovehome. There we were, armed with nebules of salbutamol, Budesonide & Saline solutions, quickly rigged everything up and off we went - for 2 minutes! The batteries went dead. We looked at each other horrified, neither of us had thought to put in spare batteries 'just in case'; as  Del-boy would say, "What a pair of plonkers!"  And he would have been right too. As it happened the couple of minutes had done enough for me to drive the couple of miles home so all was sorted in the end but the point of my little note to you all out there is simple: even if you think it's the most obvious thing in the world, when you are out and and about with your own little "Pocket Rocket" check everything - especially that you have spare batteries! :-D
I call my portable nebuliser the "Pocket Rocket" because of the power & speed it emits the much needed vapours!

"20-20 Voice" Cancer Appeal

Today I had a lovely conversation with a gentleman called Phil Johnson. Phil is the chairman of the "20-20 Voice" Cancer Appeal

Conversation is something we often take for granted but for some of you it can prove difficult. Often an acute shortness of breath can make it very difficult to express your needs or ask for help. In fact with many lung diseases its one of the danger signs that all is not well. If you have difficulty forming a sentence without gasping in between words then you should always seek medical advice.

Then imagine not being able to speak at all. Cancer is always an overwhelming diagnosis but if its cancer of the head or neck one outcome of your treatment could be or a stoma or hole in your throat, a tracheostomy, or laryngectomy which may leave you without the ability to speak.

ENT cancer is often overlooked. Fund raising and publicity quite sparse. That's where the "20-20 Voice" Cancer Appeal comes in.
Their aim is to provide up to the minute camera technology to ENT units nationwide. Early detection gives head & neck patients the best chance of retaining the power of speech. It gives ENT specialists not only the opportunity of an early diagnosis but the opportunity of immediate treatment which saves the patient unnecessary stress, providing a greater chance of avoiding major surgery and therefore saving hospitals valuable time and money. Their aim is to ensure that Head & Neck cancers get more acknowledgement

Omron CompAir Pro NE C900 nebuliser

Omron Comp Air Pro NE C900

It's a big name for a nebuliser.
Weighing in at 2.2 kg its not the smallest nebuliser in the Omron range. It's also not particularly stylish or sophisticated but to steal a phrase from a well know varnish company  “it does what it says on the tin” or in this case, the box.

It is a no-nonsense, straight-forward compressor nebuliser which is simple to assemble, easy to maintain and comes with a three year warranty and at a very reasonable price.

The most important benefit for some of you will be the Smart Structure Kit  which is a fancy name for a simple but effective medication chamber which only has TWO PARTS !
No more lost baffles, mushrooms or vaporising heads. Call it what you will, they do go astray and as many of you have discovered without this small but essential item nothing happens.

The Omron C900 packs a punch which means it is suitable to be used with a wide range of nebuliser medications and has been designed to be compatible with alternative air tubes and chambers, so for those of you who are fortunate enough to still be supplied with accessories, the C900 nebuliser with its 3 year warranty could just fit the bill. To place an order click HERE
